As you may well know, Canadian Federal and Provincial Courts
continue to define and interpret the Commodity Tax laws in our Country.
Commodity Taxes are charged on goods, property and
provincial services. Sales Taxes; Fuel Taxes; Tobacco & Alcohol Taxes;
Duties & Excises are all indirect "Goods Taxes" – and normally occasion an
immediate demand on your organizational cash position.
Many companies and organizations operating in Canada OVERPAY
millions of dollars in Commodity Taxes annually.
William Squibb & Associates provides a superior level of
Commodity Tax Recovery to Canadian companies and organizations. A senior
company in our field; we operate solely on a "contingency fee" basis.
Should we be unable to find and locate a tax saving and return for a client
business or organization, then no costs or fees are charged to the client.
We Succeed only when You Succeed!
The record of our achievement and success speaks for itself
– 4 out of 5 of our tax record searches result in Tax Recovery Payments to
our Clients - even in cases where other Tax Recovery firms had recently
William Squibb & Associates is a leader in the
field of Tax Recovery for Private and Public Sector bodies since 1988.
We believe that we are a very thorough and competent firm that provides
a scope of service that is second to none!
To date, we have recovered in excess of $30 Million
for our Corporate, Municipal, Education, Health Care, Manufacturing
Facility and First Nations clients, and continue to research and develop
new tax law interpretations and issues that has proven to be beneficial
to most of our customers.
William Squibb & Associates has been in the business of
commodity Tax Recovery since 1988. During the initial years our focus was on
Public Sector clients including First Nations, Municipalities, Universities,
Colleges, School Boards, Hospitals, Charitable & Non-Profit Organizations. Our
focus broadened in late 1992, to the manufacturing sector, when Rob Pearce
joined the firm. This has allowed us to develop a strong multi-faceted
approach to Tax Recovery in all sectors. It has also given us a great deal of
expertise in developing new issues and refining existing ones. Over the course
of time we have provided over 5,000 Tax Recovery Audits resulting in tax
refunds exceeding 30 Million dollars for our Clients.
Our success nationally, is due in large part to the level
of service and expertise, which we offer in respect to the Federal Goods &
Services Tax and Provincial Sales Taxes in all Provinces. Especially in
regards to GST, our exposure has allowed us to research and develop new
approaches and interpretations to the difficult task of apportionment, a
process through which expenditures are identified in terms of their relative
use in commercial activity as either direct or indirect, with Input Tax
Credits claimed accordingly. For many of our clients, our use of apportionment
has led to significant findings, even in cases where other Tax Recovery firms had recently been engaged.
Our research and development of new Federal and
Provincial tax issues is ongoing and has given us the necessary skills to
evaluate and pursue potential issues on behalf of our clients in a manner that
ensures claims are related only to solid issues. We are continually
searching for new areas, but refuse to make refund claims based purely on
speculation. Confidence in the validity of obtained refunds is something
we value as much as our clients!
William Squibb & Associates have engaged in Tax Recovery
services since 1988 and, since that time have successfully recovered taxes for
1,500 Municipalities across Canada in all Provinces and Territories. We have
performed reviews for cities such as Toronto and Vancouver all the way through
to very small hamlets where the review process may take as little as half a
day. Regardless of the size or nature of our clients concerns, we are able to
provide a personal, tailored and intimate approach to providing Tax Recovery
and education in a confidential and supportive manner.

As indicated previously, the time required for a
comprehensive Tax Recovery audit is inherently hinged to the amount of
work to be completed. Some clients are interested in having one specific
tax type or issue investigated while others desire a full and
comprehensive review. Size of the Client and number of locations also
effect the time required. Upon a client indicating their wish for a
review, we will then discuss with them what they would like included in
their review and at that time formulate and commit to a time frame for
completion of the work. At this time, for the City of Prince George, we
would commit to a time frame of three days on site at your location,
with the balance of work to be done at our offices if required.
Completion of review and filing claims should take no more than a week
at our location.
The Client is required to ensure that all pertinent
records are available and accessible to the consultant on the day of the
review. Other than that, the consultant requires only 10 to 15 minutes
of a staff member’s time at the beginning of the review, to familiarize
themselves with the files and establish a workspace for themselves and
During the course of our review, we will document any areas where a Tax
liability may exist. These liabilities will be noted in the final report
to the Client. Use of this information is left to the Client’s discretion.
Upon completion of the review, we will prepare a detailed report outlining
the areas of recovery entitlement. This knowledge can be used by the
Client to adjust their internal reporting procedures to reflect the issues
brought to light through the review.
the resolution of all claims initiated by our firm, we will meet with the
Client to present our report and answer any questions the Client may have
regarding the review performed.
We utilize the CICA’s Computerized Electronic Library Service, which
enables us to access information relevant to any enquiry a Client may have
regarding Sales Tax. Our toll-free Tax Hotline is available to all our
Clients at no charge.
Our commission is a modest percentage of any tax
recoveries received that were initiated by our firm. Our invoice is not
due until you have received your refund. If there are no recoveries,
there is no charge whatsoever for services rendered.
William Squibb & Associates are committed to
providing our clients the best consultants possible. For this reason,
our consultants are updated on a continually on-going basis regarding
any legislative changes and possible impact on the various financial
sectors we serve. Our firm pays 100% of course or tuition costs for any
program a consultant may wish to take to enhance their financial skills
and abilities. As well, each consultant completes two test cases every
six months that are designed to incorporate the latest tax legislation
and the results are monitored to determine the consultants’ level of
compliance. These test cases are varied by sector so one session may
incorporate a hospital test case and a manufacturer test case, while the
next session may be a non-profit organization and also a Fist Nation
Band. We continue to set aside blocks of time where the consultants also
study current legislation to identify areas open to interpretation
depending on application that may be of benefit to our current or future
clients. We have a high level of commitment to keeping our consultants
at the leading edge of their field because it’s that small increase in
knowledge or awareness that can make a huge impact on potential for
recovery. We also believe that experience is the best teacher and, as
you can see by our team assigned, we have some of the most experienced
Tax Recovery consultants in the industry today.
Our client support post-review, is 100%. As you are
aware, we offer toll-free access to professional tax advice to all or
our clients after any given review, for the period of one year. Should a
tax authority audit our client and have questions or concerns regarding
any claims initiated by our firm, we provide a consultant on-site to
meet with the client and the auditor at no cost to the client. This
service is not limited by any time constraint. If the audit happens four
years after our recovery, we will be prepared to defend the claim and
support any contention we may hold with solid documentation. Our
intention is to develop a long-term relationship with our clients and we
know that our support after the review is critical in this respect.
Should any disallowance of a previously awarded claim be determined, we
will gladly refund the portion of our commission that relates to the
